The number of Walmart associates (employees) at the end of fiscal 2023 was 2.1 million, including 1.6 million employed in the United States and 0.5 million internationally. Approximately, 70% of its total employees working in the United States at the end of 2023 were full time employees and 93% of the total US employees were hourly employees.

2022: Walmart employed approximately 2.3 million associates in 2022 of which 1.7 million were employed in the United States.
2020: As of fy 2020, Walmart and its subsidiaries employed more than 2.2 million associates.
2019: As of FY 2019, the number of Walmart employees was 2.2 millions. The company serves its customers and members through its more than 11,300 retail stores, under 58 banners in 27 countries and ecommerce channels. Its revenue in fiscal year 2019 was 514.4 Billion USD. It serves more than 275 million customers each week through its online and offline sales channels.
Walmart was incorporated in Delaware in 1969. The company started its international operations in 1991 and first ecommerce initiative in 2000. The number of total retail units of Walmart in 2019 reached 11,348. Walmart US segment had 4,756 units whereas Walmart International 5,993 and Sam’s club had 599.
Walmart operates retail, wholesale and other units in U.S., Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Central America, Chile, China, India, Japan, Mexico and the United Kingdom. It conducts its business in three reportable segments that are Walmart U.S., Walmart International and Sam’s Club. The largest of these segments that accounted for around 64% of the total revenue of the brand is Walmart US with operations in all 50 states in the U.S., Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico. Walmart International has operations in 27 countries outside USA. Sam’s club is a chain of membership only warehouse clubs.
2017: Walmart is known for its lower costs and for its customer service. Apart from that it is known for the large scale employment it has created. Today, it employs more than 2 million people. The precise number of employees whom it calls associates is close to 2.3 million people. Till some years ago, it was known to cut down on HR and operational costs to keep the costs of products low. However, in the recent years it has increased the least wages for its associates and is investing in them or they can do better in their careers and provide better service to the customers. It is investing in associate wages, training and technology to up the level of service and make their jobs more satisfying more for the associates. More than 225,000 associates will have graduated from its US academy training and development program in 2017. Walmart has several competitors in US and in the 21st century there is enough competition in HR as well. The biggest retailer of US also focuses on selecting and retailing talented associates and is continuously investing in such programs that can help it make Walmart a more satisfying workplace for its staff. The number of total staff at Walmart has continued to swell and from 1.6 million in 2005, it has grown to more than 2.3 million 2017.
